Areas of opportunity

A boatbuilding hub

Northland is internationally recognised for boatbuilding and marine engineering expertise, and is a popular Southern Hemisphere location for refits and major repairs. Improved haul-out facilities will enable the industry to expand and attract new business and investment.

Adding value to a growing harvest

Northland has a strong exotic timber harvest. It produces logs with higher density than other regions, offering superior timber for structural and laminated veneer products, as well as an opportunity for new processing options to exploit its supply of wood fibre (from lower grades currently exported as raw logs).

Expanding aquaculture sector

Building on the region’s natural advantages, Northland has developed a strategy to grow its aquaculture sector by 20 percent a year until 2030. Investment in onshore and offshore production is required to achieve this.
