Winner of the Best Medium Business Award ($10m-$50m) and the Judges' Supreme Award for International Business.

The automation software provider WhereScape has won the Best Medium Business Award ($10m-$50) and the Judges' Supreme Award for International Business in the 2016 New Zealand International Business Awards.

Big data is big business for Auckland and Portland (Oregon) based WhereScape, which develops the software for organisations to manage and analyse big sets of data.

WhereScape’s chief executive Michael Whitehead says the business is built on big ambitions:

“We are limited by our aspirations and talents, not by our market. We want to be a core component for data led organisations.”

“The key to our success is alignment. Great people, great product, luck and hard work are not enough – everyone at WhereScape knows what success is, and how they are contributing to it.”

WhereScape has customers in 26 countries and recently expanded into Asia where it has attracted some high profile brands including Chanel. It has opened an office in Singapore, and the team there also supports resellers in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

WhereScape also has offices in the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe, a distributor in Australia, and resellers in other markets including South America, Canada and South Africa.

The United States is its largest and fastest growing market, contributing 42 percent of annual revenue, with clients including GE, Nike and the Dallas Cowboys.

Whitehead says having an office and customers in the United States provides the company with good credibility.

“We are a niche player internationally, competing with well-known and well-funded companies as well as start-ups. Yet when we start talking US references we are instantly credible.”

The company also takes social responsibility seriously, and was the first New Zealand technology firm to be accredited as a Living Wage Employer.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the awards, run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) with strategic partner ANZ, which celebrate the success of New Zealand businesses on the world stage.
