Winner of Best Emerging Business (jointly with Haka Tourism Group)

Cloud-based scheduling software company Timely, has had a global mindset from day one and aims to be a world leader in appointment software for small businesses in the beauty and wellbeing industries.

Timely won the Best Emerging Business award (jointly with Haka Tours) in the 2016 New Zealand International Business Awards, run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) in partnership with ANZ.

Success has come quickly for the Dunedin based business co-founded by Ryan Baker, Andrew Schofield and William Berger, which was established only three years ago.

Their appointment booking system for small businesses in the hair, beauty and well-being industries has already clocked up over 6,500 customers in 85 countries around the world, and recently hit "break-even" making it one of New Zealand’s most successful high growth tech companies.

The company’s culture and mindset are important to its ongoing success and Baker says it’s important to have global ambition from day one.

“Design your business so that attracting and retaining a customer works just as well in New York as it does in New Lynn,” he says.

“Many things are key to the success of an early stage SaaS business. Our culture is key to our success at Timely. A strong culture is a competitive advantage for a global business.”

Australia is Timely’s largest market, and it expects future growth to come from the burgeoning beauty and well-being industries across the Tasman and in the United Kingdom.

To help sales tick along, Timely has over 500 resellers around the world who are available to meet face-to-face with potential and existing customers.

The company has attracted tech investors Rowan Simpson and Lance Wiggs, and has a board of directors that hails from the tech industry.

Prior to starting Timely, Baker and Schofield co-founded BookIt, a booking engine for the New Zealand tourism industry, which was acquired by Trade Me in 2010.

Timely is one of 700 companies that New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) focuses on extensively to help them grow internationally, bigger, better and faster.

From the Judges:

Timely is an excellent example of a large company process and structure being used effectively in a small business. Timely is certainly a company to watch as they could dominate this space in the future – another example of Kiwi ingenuity with a clear focus.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the awards, run by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) with strategic partner ANZ, which celebrate the success of New Zealand businesses on the world stage.
